EXPEDITION

3-LAYER SYSTEM

EXPEDITION

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that heavier, thicker clothing is warmer for expeditions in the coldest climates. Several layers of air, warmed by your body heat, are much more effective at keeping you warm than one large air pocket beneath a big jacket as that takes much longer to heat up. That is why we, MUSTO, were at the forefront of championing the 3-Layer System. When technical clothing first became accessible, many companies had clothes you could layer up. But we saw the potential. When Cornelius ‘Conny’ van Rietschoten sailed the Whitbread Round the Wold Race in 1977, we convinced him to try out the layering system through the extreme cold of the Southern Ocean. And it worked.

BASE LAYER

The layer closest to your skin, the base layer, has to be your most comfortable. It should be lightweight, regulate your temperature, wick away sweat and dry quickly so you do not get cold in the bitter winter weather. The Evolution Merino Long Sleeve T-shirt is an excellent base layer as it is anti-odour, lightweight and regulates your temperature. Alternatively, in extreme cold or lower energy activity, go for the incredibly warm Extreme Thermal Fleece Top and Trousers or the Thermal Base Layer Turtle Neck.

MIDDLE LAYER

Your mid layer is your insulation. This is your most versatile layer allowing you to add or remove warmth as you increase or decrease your energy output. Choose a mid layer that is lightweight, warm and breathable. Look for the Evolution Stratus Down Hoody for incredible warmth without weight, ideal for dry conditions. For minimum bulk, choose a fast drying, breathable fleece like the Bruma Funnel Fleece Or Evolution PrimaLoft® Jacket. Or block the wind – a cause of rapid heat loss – in the Middle Layer Jacket.

OUTER LAYER

Your outer layer is the first defence against the elements. This is your weatherproof layer. When you are doing high-energy activities, you will want a very breathable and waterproof, technical shell jacket and trouser, like the Evolution Survival GORE-TEX® PrimaLoft® Parka and Evolution Survival GORE-TEX® PrimaLoft® Bib. Arctic Expedition outer layers are highly technical for both your comfort and safety. They feature technical components such as ventilation that reduces condensation to prevent freezing and RECCO® Rescue reflectors to help mountain rescue teams locate you when lost or buried in the snow. Other features include a high collar and a three-way adjustable hood with a responsibly sourced coyote fur trim that does not retain water or freeze in arctic conditions.

LAYERS IN ACTION

The three layers should work in harmony to keep you dry, comfortable and at just the right temperature. Choose the right levels of insulation for the activity you are doing and you will see that with more, thinner layers you have greater versatility for warming up and cooling down according to your needs.

The base layer will wick sweat away from your skin to keep you warm and dry. The mid layer will insulate you (you can wear more than one mid layer). Look for PrimaLoft®, duck down and Polartec® - just a few excellent insulators. Finally, the outer layer will protect you from the snow, rain and wind. GORE-TEX® fabric is the ultimate waterproof material for extreme environments.

SKI

3-LAYER SYSTEM

SKI

Remember, when it comes to high energy activities like skiing, warmer doesn’t mean better! When looking for the best ski jacket, think about how much energy you’ll expend in your activity, how cold the environment will be, and whether you will be stationary for any length of time.

Think of skiing as an athletic activity and you’ll quickly realise that you might not want to be wrapped up in duvet-like down over woolly jumpers. With 50 years of technical clothing expertise under our belt, we have developed the ultimate combination of layers to keep you warm, dry and comfortable whatever your winter sport. We want to help you understand what to look for in your clothing whether skiing, ski touring or snowboarding.

When you are doing a high-energy sport like ski touring, you will want a very breathable, and mobile technical shell jacket and trouser without insulation, like the Every 3-Layer GORE-TEX® Jacket and Trouser. For leisure skiing and walking, you can wear waterproofs with light insulation, like the incredibly stretchy Matthiessen BR2 PrimaLoft® Jacket or the Copeland BR2 PrimaLoft® Jacket for added warmth.

Choose the right levels of insulation for the activity you are doing and you will see that with more, thinner layers you have greater versatility for warming up and cooling down according to your needs.

The base layer will wick sweat away from your skin to keep you warm and dry and can offer muscle support. Look for anti-odour fabrics like Merino wool and NILIT® BodyFresh. The mid layer will insulate you (you can wear more than one mid layer). Look for PrimaLoft® and Polartec® - just a few excellent insulators. Finally, the outer layer will protect you from the snow, rain and wind. GORE-TEX® fabric is the ultimate waterproof material for extreme sport, but MUSTO BR1 and BR2 products are stormproof too so you stay dry in all weathers.

Whether on the foot of untouched mountains, or on the slopes in search of the freshest powder, these layers easily transition with you. Pack extra layers into a MUSTO rucksack and you will be prepared for anything.
