Wear light, breathable layers that allow freedom of movement for clay shooting. This will ensure you stay at the right temperature and are comfortable. A well-fitted shooting vest will help the gun mount, provide recoil protection and give you large pockets for carrying cartridges. Trousers worn with sturdy boots will protect you from wet grass and ensure stable footing for shooting clays. It’s usually a summer sport, but be prepared for all weathers.
The base layer is the foundation of the 3-layer system. Worn closest to the skin, the base layer needs to wick away moisture and allow perspiration to escape. In mild to warm weather, wear a lightweight top such as the Women’s Evolution Merino Long Sleeve T-shirt that regulates your temperature and is anti-odour. Or wear the stretchy Evolution Sunblock Long Sleeve T-shirt that has UPF 40 sun protection too.
The middle layer, worn between your base and outer layer, is designed for lightweight insulation. Choose a fleece gilet like the Glemsford Polartec® Fleece Gilet for unrestricted movement across the shoulders, or a fleece jacket with room to move like the Technical Wool Zip Neck Fleece or the Women’s Essential Microfleece. Warmth, that allows perspiration to escape, is an essential and versatile layer for warmth when the weather turns cool.
Your outer layer is your weather protection and helps gun mount on your shoulder. It can also offer protection from gun recoil. A waterproof jacket like our bestselling Clay Shooting BR2 Jacket allows you to move freely and keep the rain off, vital in changeable weather. For high summer, get a stable gun mount without extra warmth with the mesh Competition Skeet Vest. Both of these outer layers give the option of adding in D3O® recoil impact protection pads.
Your base layer, mid layer and outer layer work together to keep you dry, warm and protected. Your base layer keeps you dry and comfortable by wicking away sweat, the mid layer adds warmth, and the outer layer is protection from the weather. Waterproof fabrics, anti-odour merino wool, UPF 40 and more technologies in the kit help keep you focused on the shoot.
We test all of our kit with professionals and they put our layers through all conditions to make sure they stand up to a lifetime of use. This way, you know you can rely on your MUSTO kit to help you perform in any weather in the Clay field.
Layer up in warm, waterproof and breathable clothing that will protect you during winter game shooting. Ensure you also have the freedom of movement across your shoulders to swing your gun, and a jacket with large pockets for cartridges. Choose sturdy footwear for in the field and don’t forget accessories like a cartridge bag and tweed cap. There is often a tweed dress code for game shoots, and we have all the brown and green tweed you need to keep you camouflaged.
Game shoots are often held in the colder months, so it’s important to keep warm as you stand and walk to your peg. Your first layer, or base layer, is worn close to your skin. A shirt and tie are usually required on a game shoot, so choose a shirt made of a performance fabric like the Classic Twill Shirt that wicks away perspiration. This keeps you dry and warm without restricting your movement. On winter days, you may want to wear a technical, thermal base layer like the Thermal Base Layer Turtle Neck or Evolution Merino Long Sleeve T-shirt under your shirt.
The mid layer is your insulation layer. Stay warm whatever the weather in a lightweight knit jumper or fleece. The Shooting Zip Neck Knit or Shooting Crew Neck Knit will sit smartly over your shirt and provide a light layer of warmth. For cold winter shoots, layer up in the incredibly warm Technical Wool Zip Neck Knit or Women’s Glemsford Polartec® Gilet. They are easy to layer up or down according to the weather so you stay the right temperature.
Your outer layer is your complete weather defence and camouflage from the birds. Your outer layer needs to be waterproof, breathable to allow perspiration to escape, windproof and allow you to swing your gun freely. Browse our waterproof Technical Tweeds that protect you in any weather and look the part in premium tweed. For lightweight protection in changeable weather, choose the waterproof, packable and award winning Fenland BR2 Packaway Jacket and Pants. Or you can choose from the Highland Jacket Trilogy offering a weight for every temperature.
Freedom of movement for your gun swing is vital, so choose clothing you can freely move in. It is also important that perspiration is quickly drawn away from your skin to keep you dry and comfortable – the primary function of your base layer. Staying warm will help you to enjoy the shoot and is essential for focus, so buy a lightweight mid layer that will keep you warm. Your outer layer needs to shield you from all weathers. Invest in windproof and breathable waterproofs in tweed, dark green or brown colours for camouflage and weather protection. Discover technical GORE-TEX® jackets, Durable Water Repellent on fleeces and technical tweed that keeps you dry.
Stalking and hunting demands patience, but patience wears thin if you are cold, wet and uncomfortable. So, you need waterproof, breathable clothing that retains your body heat. Layer up in camouflage, tweed, or dark coloured clothing that provides freedom of movement and protection against the elements and keeps you hidden from sight. Layers give you the option to add or remove warmth as needed. There should also be minimum rustle from your clothes so as not to alert the animal to your presence.
Although you can hunt year round, much stalking takes place in the colder seasons and on open land. So, you need a base layer that will keep you warm and wick away perspiration as your temperature changes from sitting to walking. Choose one of our technical Merino, Active or Thermal Base Layers. If you are wearing tweeds, you could opt for the Women’s Country Shirt or the Classic Twill Shirt with wicking properties. These base layers allow freedom of movement, keep you warm and wick away moisture so you stay dry.
You could be stationary for long stretches, so you need lightweight layers to pull on for vital warmth. The primary role of a mid layer is providing insulation from the weather and, in stalking, from the ground you are lying on. A gilet like the Women’s Melford Fleece Gilet adds warmth to your core without restricting your arms. Or choose the warmth of the Quilted PrimaLoft® Jacket that offers an unrivalled warmth to weight ratio without bulk. When you start moving again, you can pack these breathable mid layers, including technical jumpers like the Technical Wool Fleece Jacket, into your bag.
Tweed and dark colours offer camouflage on the open moors and in the woods. But you also need to shield yourself from the weather. Choose rugged, waterproof outer layers that will stand up to the wear of stalking like the Printed GORE-TEX® Jacket and Treeks in a tweed print, or the MacNab BR2 Jacket and Keepers BR2 Trousers. You also do not want to be heard by the animal, and the Whisper Jacket in men and women’s fits is soft and does not rustle, ideal for hunting. Staying dry and comfortable will keep you warm so you can enjoy stalking and hunting for longer.
The 3-Layer System is the most effective way to regulate your temperature as you stalk and hunt. The base layer will keep you warm and draw away perspiration to keep you dry. The mid layer is your warmth. Insulating Polartec® fleece or PrimaLoft® insulation effectively traps your body heat and allows moisture vapour to pass through to keep you dry. Your outer layer is your primary weather defence from rain, snow and wind. GORE-TEX® and MUSTO BR2 technical fabrics are rugged, weatherproof and durable to keep you comfortable and enhance your performance.
