Top 8 items for winter horse riding by Miriam Goddard

Musto Ambassador and International Showjumper Miriam Goddard shares her definitive guide on what to wear riding in the winter months.

So the cold weather has certainly arrived. After all the wet and mild weather we had at the start of winter, I had actually forgotten the feeling of not being able to feel my toes while riding! This got me thinking about what items I couldn’t be without around the yard or at a show.
It’s in the wintertime that you really realise how important it is to have the right clothing if you want to get the best results. So here are my top items that help get me through the winter months and let me focus on the horse’s training and my riding performance rather than how cold I am!

 1. WATERPROOF RIDING JACKET

This is essential for both cold weather and rain. I have tried many different styles in the past but the Musto Extremity GORE-TEX® Jacket is the best I have ever worn. It’s ideal for around the yard, riding and teaching. Its best features are the longer length, which keeps the top half of your legs warm while riding. The jacket is windproof and breathable with a brilliant hood. And the side entry hand pockets prove particularly useful when teaching on those cold evenings.

2. WOOLY HAT

During the winter I am always seen wearing my woolly Evolution Signature Hat around the yard. If my head is warm then the rest of my body feels warmer.

3. THERMAL SOCKS

Warm socks are a must in the winter! Once your toes get cold in your boots it’s always hard to warm them up again. So don’t let it get to that stage by choosing a decent pair of technical riding socks, like these striking Competition Socks.

4.  BASE LAYER

My discrete turtle neck base layer is brilliantly warm and it also boats a quick drying material, so even if you sweat you won’t get cold. As it’s white with a turtle neck collar, I can double up on competition days and wear it as a competition shirt!

5. WEATHERPROOF SHOW JACKET

Not only is my Prestige Show Jacket stylish, it is also water repellent, windproof and incredibly breathable. This new jacket is a welcome addition to the equestrian market and is without doubt my must-have piece for the winter competition circuit.

6. TECHNICAL BREECHES

My Hickstead ActiveSeam® Breeches are extremely warm, comfortable and shower resistant. So when you spill that ice-cold bucket of water on yourself while trying to carry it across the yard, it won’t be so cold!

7. NECK GAITER

A neck gaiter is much safer than wearing a scarf around the horses. The Fleece Neck Tube will keep the back of my neck warm and can be pulled up around your face when the weather gets really bitter.

8. MICRO FLEECE

The DWR Microfleece is an exceptional mid layer that will keep you warm underneath your waterproof coat. It is also a great item of clothing for any outdoor activity; I’ll certainly be wearing it again when I hit the slopes this winter.
