what to wear in the yard

Early mornings in all conditions: caring for a horse means being there. No matter the weather. Apply this uncompromising attitude to your kit bag. Pick warm gear that can muck in with you. Follow the Musto 3-Layer System for year-round protection.

Whether you’re working the yard, schooling or grooming your horse, do it in comfort.

OUTER LAYER

When you’re up against the weather, your outer layer provides the pinnacle of protection. Choose garments with GORE-TEX® membranes for a durable waterproof barrier against the elements. Opt for jackets with a lightweight construction, designed for use in the yard and field.

MID LAYER

Warm, lightweight and packable: your mid-layer is the most flexible part of the 3-Layer System. This layer can be worn or removed as required, by design. Look to fabrics with a Durable Water Repellent finish for protection against rain, muck and moisture around the yard. Polartec® and PrimaLoft® provide vital insulation. And for greater freedom of movement, opt for a gilet.

BASE LAYER

Base layers have a range of functions. As the foundation of your kit they need to wick moisture away from your skin: an essential feature for comfort when you’re active around the yard. That means this layer also needs to be highly breathable. Look to technical fabrics such as merino wool and Polartec® fleece for an effective combination of both.

ACCESSORIES

Working around the yard is as tough on your gear as it is on you. You’re exposed to the elements. You’re working up a sweat. Pick the right accessories to complete your kitbag to get the job done.
