Charlotte Kerwood: sights set firmly on Olympic shoot-out
Along with the London World Cup next month, which doubles as the test event, this will serve as ammunition (pardon the pun) for selection.
The British team for the Games is due to be announced on 3 May and, obviously, I am doing everything I can to make sure my name is in it. It is basically a shoot-out between Shona Marshall and myself for the one female trap shooter place an offer.
But weirdly, I’m not nervous going into Tucson. I feel I’m shooting well and I believe that if I shoot as I know I can, there is nothing more I can do to stake my claim.
I do find myself thinking ahead to London and dreaming of what could happen but for now all I’m dreaming about is winning gold in Arizona.
So far this year I’ve been to Qatar, Australia and now America. I travel with my coach Kevin Gill and out here we have been with the rest of the team, so that’s nice.
We have been out for meals and – as usual if I’m involved – a lot of shopping. I won £1,200 in the competition in Doha and spent most of that on clothes in the huge malls over there! But whenever a competition is over I want to be on the first plane back home.
I’ve seen so little of my family over the last few months and miss everyone when I’m away. There is still a training camp in Italy before the London World Cup too.
It’s always fun getting your gun into other countries through security but in America they’re used to guns so it was pretty straightforward this time. It’s worse in countries where they don’t speak English, like in Chile last year.
I had to wait a very long time for my guns to be sent on to me and nearly missed a competition.
Charlotte will know in just over a month’s time if her battle for the only Olympic place has been successful. It all hinges on two selection events, the first in America and the second here in London at the Olympic venue.
