In the Press: Zara Phillips is Woman of the Month in Zest Magazine

Zest Magazine has named Zara Phillips ‘Woman of the Month’ in their October issue.   The former World Eventing Champion, 29, talks famous families, Olympic dreams and her first sportswear range:

‘I’d love to make the GB Olympic Equestrian Team

To compete at an Olympic Games is something every athlete dreams about.  I had to pull out of the last Games because my horse was injured.  Hopefully we’ll have a bit more luck in the run-up to 2012 and make that dream come true.

I’m an athlete first and foremost

I’m lucky to be part of an incredibly famous and privileged family and I get to wear some beautiful dresses, but I didn’t want to put my name to a ball gown or fashion range.  I wanted something that reflected my day-to-day lifestyle and sport – the real me.

Riding isn’t just my job, it’s a way of life

I wanted to create a clothing range that I’d wear myself.  It needed to be comfortable and stylish enough that you could get off your horse and go straight to the pub without feeling out of place.

I’m a real outdoorsy girl

… As well as riding, cycling and walking keeping me fit.  And mucking out the horses is a real fitness boost!

My signature style is jeans and a hoodie

I live a very unglamorous life in the country and spend all day, every day around horses and dogs, so I need practical, comfortable clothes.  I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty.  I think people would be quite shocked if they saw me after a day at the stables, or worse still, smelled me!

My collection has a personal stamp

When you represent GB at equestrian events you’re given a team number, which is stamped onto your hat – mine is 176.  I added my initials to create ‘ZP176 by MUSTO’.

Dating a sportsman is really good for me

[Zara has been with her boyfriend England rugby star Mike Tindall since 2003].  We both understand the time and dedication it takes to work your way up to the top level of your sport.  Thankfully, I really like rugby, and he’s trying to learn as much as he can about horses.  It’s great but a bit annoying when he thinks he knows better than me!

I love the equality of being an athlete

Everyone has to work as hard as possible to be successful and achieve their goals, regardless of who your mum or family might be.
