Musto Performance Clothing: John Savage Returns to Musto Etchells Winter Championship

Australian sailor John Savage is set to return to this year’s MUSTO Etchells Australasian Winter Championship after a six-year hiatus.

The former dual Etchells World Champion has not raced at the MUSTO-sponsored winter sailing regatta since 2004, as he has been racing a number of larger boats, including his own 38 Degrees South, in various waters around Australia.

Savage’s previous Etchells racing career saw him achieve world championship firsts with his crew in Toronto in 1979, and Newport, Australia in 1988. He also came third in his home town of Melbourne in 1980.

It wasn’t until last year’s regatta was scheduled for Melbourne that he decided to make a return to Etchells championship racing.

He said: “I thought it was time to have a little bit of social sailing again. I loved [Mooloolaba] so much when I did it last time and everybody keeps talking about the event so I thought this year, since everything is off my plate at the moment, it will be a nice regatta to do mid-winter and get away from Melbourne.

“What I love about the Etchells is that they are always so competitive and it is always a good bunch of guys that race together. It is the best class in the world.”

The MUSTO Etchells Australasian Winter Championship will be held off Mooloolaba Beach on the Sunshine Coast of Australia from 10th June.
