In The Press: Musto’s Simon Oates talks to MWB Magazine
MUSTO’s accessories designer Simon Oates features in this month’s issue of MWB, in which he tells of his childhood obsession with shoes, and how his role at MUSTO allows him to view current fashion trends from a different perspective.
He tells the magazine: “At 12 I had a burgeoning footwear obsession. My contemporaries were wearing Gola and Hi-Tec, whereas I had a wicked pair of Pony American football sneakers, with the fold-down tongue. I even used to design my own footwear ranges in the school holidays!”
Simon attributes his early fashion influences to his adolescent interests in hip-hop, graffiti and break-dancing. “I loved Run DMC, LL Cool J and Public Enemy, and I suppose my early fashion choices reflected this; Lee of Levi’s jeans, Stussy t-shirts, a lot of Adidas and Nike and LA Raiders merchandise.”
Simon also discusses how working for a sports clothing brand such as MUSTO has allowed him to see the current nautical trends amongst high-end fashion designers from the other, more professional side.
“This is something [MUSTO has] been doing for years,” he says. “It’s great for us to delve into our archive and reinvigorate some of our past successes for a different, more trend-aware customer.”
