Sailing News: Skandia Team GBR 49er update

In recent weeks there has been no less that three World Championships and two European Championships for Skandia Team GBR sailing teams.

The 49er European Championships in Poland was a successful event for Skandia Team GBR, with two podium finishes for the team. Chris Draper and Peter Greenhalgh were the event winners, with consistent results all week guaranteeing them the championship. Steve Morrison and Ben Rhodes spent the majority of the week leading the fleet, however in the final few races lost the top spot to their teammates finishing the regatta with a bronze.

For Draper and Greenlaugh this represents the first major win for the pair. They will be competing as part of the pre-Olympic GBR team at Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta. “We’re really, really pleased,” Draper explained.  “We’re still a new team and we’re learning from that.  “They all say that Olympic campaigning is a marathon, not a sprint, so winning events is bit more than we were perhaps looking for at this stage, we were just aiming for a podium spot here really.  “But it’s good to be ahead of our goals and to be able to say we’re European Champions.  It’s got a nice ring to it!”

For Morrison and Rhodes the result is also an extremely positive one as they are still familiarising themselves with new equipment during the event and are seeing much better boat speed with their new boat, Rubber Lover Girl. Watch the video of the launch of Steve and Ben’s boat.
