Volvo Musto Optimist End of Season Championships

322 Optimist sailors have flocked to Rutland Water Sailing Club in Northampton to compete in the Volvo MUSTO Optimist End of Season Championships this weekend.

The Volvo MUSTO Inlands Championships earlier this year

The last racing event in the Optimist sailing calendar attracts some of the top sailors in the class – and potential future Olympic sailors – with a record number of entries. 231 competitors will line up in the main fleet for those aged 10 to 15 years old and 99 in the regatta fleet for those aged 8 and over.

Ones to watch include Volvo MUSTO Inlands Champion Arran Holman who sails at Hollowell Sailing Club and top British girl, Sarah Norbury, 13 from South Staffordshire Sailing Club.  Sarah represented Britain in the European championships in July.

Arran will be battling it out over the weekend against his fellow Optimist world championships squad members; Matthew Whitfield, 13 from Penarth Sailing Club, Josh Voller, 14 from Burghfield Sailing Club and Oliver Grogono, 14 from St Mawes Sailing Club.  Alongside Scott Wallis, who is absent from the End of Seasons due to competing abroad, the five strong team will represent Great Britain at the Optimist world championships in Langkawi, Malaysia in December.

Others to watch out for are UK Optimist Junior National Champion, Freddie Grogono, 11.  Also rising up the ranks are Daniel Whiteley and Jamie Calder. At this year’s Nationals Daniel finished 4th and Jamie 5th.

MUSTO joined Volvo in 2001 to sponsor the UK Optimist Inland Championships, the National Championships and the End of Seasons.

Good luck to everyone!
