OUTER LAYER

The outer layer in the 3-Layer System should be highly protective: safeguarding you against the elements while keeping you visible. Garments featuring GORE-TEX® supply this ultimate all-weather protection whilst being supremely breathable. This makes GORE-TEX® garments highly suited to active people. For a cost-efficient alternative, Musto’s BR2 technology offers a comparable level of waterproof protection and breathability.

MIDDLE LAYER

Your lightweight mid-layer builds on the temperature regulation of your base. But it also protects you from the elements. Breathable and lightweight, the mid-layer should be water-resistant and fast-drying while offering complete freedom of movement. Look to garments featuring PrimaLoft®. This insulation feature technical properties such as water-resistance, fast-drying times and a light weight comparable to down.

BASE LAYER

The foundation of your kit. An effective base layer should trap air next to the skin, minimising the loss of body heat. Perspiration also transmits heat up to thirty times faster than air. That’s why a base layer needs to be breathable, wicking and fast-drying: merino wool and thermal fleece are ideal base fabrics. Choose highly wicking and mildly insulating materials when engaging in aerobic activities in cold weather. Our Active Base Layers have been designed for these periods of high energy.

ACCESSORIES

High-performance accessories complete your outfit and give you the edge out on the water. Musto Thermal and fast wicking caps and hats keep the water and sun away from your eyes, while the premium footwear, gloves and socks ensure that you sail in complete comfort. Wherever the journey takes you, stay prepared with a waterproof holdall to keep your kit safe and dry.

In Action

The MUSTO 3-layer system is put through its paces in some of the most testing conditions on the planet. Volvo Ocean Race sailors wear MUSTO apparel to stay dry, comfortable and mobile in the brutal conditions of the open ocean. In race conditions, MUSTO sailors wear base layers for comfort against the skin, with sweat wicking properties of merino wool and other technical fabrics helping to keep competitors performing at their peak. Next is the added warmth and weather protection of the mid layer, where technologies such as durable water repellent (DWR) coated fleece and PrimaLoft® Insulation deliver breathable, warm protection. Finally, our HPX GORE-TEX® shell layers provide an all but impregnable barrier against the fury of the open ocean.

The robust durability of our ocean sailing kit was put to an extreme test in 2014, when Team Vestas Wind suffered terrifying shipwreck in the Indian Ocean at night. The Vestas Wind crew were forced to spend a night on their stricken vessel, braving wind and rain before finally being rescued by the coastguard the following morning. Team Vestas Wind endured a sailor’s worst nightmare, in part thanks to the MUSTO 3-layer system that stood up to the weather alongside them.
