YOU CIRCUMNAVIGATE THE PLANET EVERY YEAR, WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGES?

The many changes in weather is pretty challenging. One second I am in the blistering heat of the doldrums, the next I am 50 degrees south avoiding icebergs!
Although every four years I have to deliver Christmas presents to solo sailors in the Southern Ocean attempting to circumnavigate the planet themselves. That is a challenging landing!

HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT GIVING UP? IF SO WHY, AND WHAT DROVE YOU TO KEEP GOING?

Of course, every year in fact. It is a very long night! However, treats and messages people leave out give me that little boost I need. And my pockets are always full of carrots for the reindeer. In all honesty, I don’t think I ever would or could give up. I can’t stop until I have visited every house… or boat...or stable… I am committed to the job and to making all those kids happy. That makes me happy.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT A TIME YOU’VE BEEN AT THE MERCY OF THE ELEMENTS BUT YOU MANAGED TO MASTER THE SITUATION?

I hit a particularly bad storm back in '96 over the coast of Chile which seriously damaged the sleigh and made the reindeer feel very unwell. It was pitch black, strong winds and I had no clue which way was up. I managed to work with the reindeer to regain control and Rudolph navigated a route out of the storm. It’s this kind of teamwork that enables me to master the elements.

WHAT DO YOU DO TO KEEP YOURSELF ENTERTAINED WHEN OUT ON LONG VOYAGES?

Once we’ve stacked the presents on the sleigh there isn’t too much room for anything else, so I spend the trip singing to the crew (reindeer). It helps keep spirits high, especially as we are making our last few deliveries. I’ve got a great set of pipes… although Rudolph might disagree.
I have to say though, because I’ve got the trip down to roughly 30 hours, there isn’t a minute to spare so boredom isn’t a big problem for me.

WHAT ARE YOUR MUST-HAVE PIECES OF KIT?

I must have my Musto bags for storing gifts; they are roomy, extremely durable and most importantly waterproof. In 1989 little Timmy from Kent woke up on Christmas morning to a soggy Game Boy and I have never forgiven myself. The Elves didn't talk to me until the Millennium.

WHY DO YOU CHOOSE MUSTO CLOTHING?

I wear Musto because it's the best kit for extreme outdoor adventures like circumnavigating the globe. Every Christmas Eve, I'm confident that whatever the elements throw at me, Musto's got my back and the children will get their presents.
I can't cry off because of a thunderstorm or a bit of rain. I'm Nick Claus!

HOW WILL YOU BE RELAXING ON CHRISTMAS DAY?

Normally on Christmas day I’m so tired that I just crash in front of the fire. Boxing day is when the real party happens!
