Team GBR Storm the FEI World Equestrian Stage

Two Gold Medals, Two Bronze, One World Record – One Team

Excitement peaked at the World Equestrian Games in Tryon in the USA this week as Team GBR, featuring Charlotte Dujardin, Emile Faurie, Carl Hester and Spencer Wilton, won their first medal; a Team Bronze in the Dressage Grand Prix

After an incredible display with Hawtins Delicato, Carl Hester and his ten-year-old gelding walked away with a score of 77.283%: a personal best in the Grand Prix.

“I knew I’d have to have the ride of my life today and I did,” the maestro, Carl Hester, commented after the event. “I had 77% in my mind as my target… so I couldn’t be more pleased but I’m surprised! Earlier in the week I didn’t think he’d cope but I rode him early this morning in the arena in walk and he felt relaxed so I thought I might have a good ride. He absolutely put his heart into that test.”

Spencer Wilton and Charlotte Dujardin also put on a strong performance for the British team after completing their tests, scoring 72.795 and 77.764 respectively.

“What an amazing horse to come here and do that!” said a joyous Charlotte about her nine year-old mare, Mount St John Freestyle, owned by The Mount St John Stud . “To cope with the environment and produce a test like that, I’m over the moon with her.”

Eventing showjumping, meanwhile, had to be postponed for a day due to heavy rainfall on Sunday. “Rosalind Canter entered the arena as the final rider for GBR with Great Britain in the gold medal position, and individually sitting in silver, on her own and Caroline Moore’s Allstar B”, the World Equestrian Games’ press team comments. “A textbook clear round from the Lincolnshire rider not only secured Great Britain as World Champions, but also confirmed an individual medal for Ros, and team Olympic qualification for Great Britain at Tokyo 2020”.

After Ros’ brilliant clear round the team gold was secured for Great Britain with a score of 88.8: a new world record – posting the lowest team score in world championship history. Ireland took team silver on 93 and France bronze with a score of 99.8.

Richard Waygood MBE, Performance Manager for Eventing, said; “It’s been an amazing day…they all pulled together, they all went in there for the team and stuck to the system. It was close at the end, but even before Ros jumped the last fence I knew she had it. Our primary objective coming here was qualifying for Tokyo [Olympic Games] and our next objective was to win as many medals as possible, and we’ve achieved both goals.”
