What to Wear for Show Jumping Competitions
Musto Show Jumping Ambassador Miriam Goddard takes us through the competition essentials that ensure she performs at her best in the arena.
When competition day comes you have a lot to think about, whatever level you are competing at. Getting to the venue on time, tacking the horse up, walking (and remembering!) the course, then warming up the horse before finally entering the competition arena.
So much planning and effort goes into those few minutes tackling the course, where you hope all the hard work pays off. You don’t want to be worrying about anything else other than that course of fences going into the ring. As a rider you need to be feeling comfortable to stay 100% focused and give your horse the best chance of clearing the jumps. That is why having the right clothing is an incredibly important part of your competition preparation.
Below is my essential list of equestrian clothing for show days. My choices are not only smart and stylish but also practical and comfortable, so I can focus on peak performance in the show jumping ring. All kit featured complies with British Show Jumping Association regulations.
1. TECHNICAL BREECHES
My Hickstead ActiveSeam® Breeches are extremely warm, comfortable and shower resistant. Perfect for show days, even if it does rain! They are so comfortable that I happily wear them all day at a show.
2. COMPETITION GLOVES
I don’t like to ride without gloves, but they have to be a certain type. The Musto Competition Gloves are perfect because they are lightweight, flexible and smart with a good grip so your hands don’t slip through the reins.
3. WEATHERPROOF SHOW JACKET
Not only is my Prestige Show Jacket stylish, it is also water repellent, windproof and incredibly breathable. This new jacket is a welcome addition to the equestrian market and is without doubt my must-have piece for the competition circuit. The zipped pockets are a great feature for holding your money and phone.
5. COMPETITION SOCKS
My Competition Socks are brilliant for wearing under leather boots as they are cushioned for the soul of your feet, but also breathable on the leg so you don’t over heat.
6. PERFORMANCE STOCK SHIRT
Lightweight, breathable and quick drying – this stock shirt is everything you need when you’re in competition mode. It’s important to feel comfortable when the pressure is on. This shirt is also a smart choice for other equestrian disciplines, especially if you’re looking to compete without a show jacket in warm weather as per the new British Dressage rules.
7. WARM UP JACKET
Because the Musto Arena BR2 Jacket is both lightweight and waterproof, it gives you the flexibility you need for tacking up the horse, warming up in the collecting ring and staying dry if it rains. This is always highly likely, especially if competing in the UK!
